Just picked up a Cosmo 180 3pt PTO driven spreader. It’s the same spreader as is sold under the Landpride, First Choice, and many other labels.
Before I go burn the heck out of the lawn trying to set this thing up, could someone provide advice on setting the spinner vanes. The pitch of the spinner vanes is adjustable to provide balanced coverage when using different types (sizes/weights) of materials. I know how to calibrate the spreader by collecting material in a tarp or multiple trays, but having a starting point of reference would sure help. The Mfg supplies info on gate opening settings but the vane settings seem to be trial and error.
What setting works best for powered lime?
Small granulized fertilizer?
Pelletized fertilizer?
Pelletized lime?
Do most people run the spreader at PTO speed (540rpm)?
Is there a relationship between spread width and PTO speed (i.e. if spread width is 40’ at 540rpm will it be 20” at a PTO speed of 270rpm)?
Should the pitch of the vanes change if running at slower PTO speed?

Cant really help much about your question, but was wondering what you use wheelie bar on tractor for? ( drag racing). LOL ....

Buz, sorry, I completely missed seeing this at first.
I think Plots was just poking at your drawbar in your #3 picture, with the hooks hanging out the back it looks like a wheelie bar off a drag car.
Now, back to the spreader. The manufacturer should have a table in the owner's (operator's?) manual that lays out a relationship between a) tractor speed, b)spreader setting for a particular product, smaller grains means smaller opening, usually a number from 1-10 or 25, and finally c) the desired application rate in pounds per acre or some such equation.
The end result is, using random nubers as an example, a tractor moving at 3.2 miles per hour, and the spreader set to 5, will lay down fertilizer granules at the rate of one ton per acre.

Plots, and here we thought this was just a friendly jab across the Mason-Dixon line at a Yankee with a fancy tractor... ;-p
Buz, I just noticed (the coffee took effect) that you were inquiring about the angle of the vanes. The angle of the vanes determines, to some degree, the width of broadcast, as well as the pattern, ie, fine even spread, or thicker bands with space between. See if there is some mention in the book.

Thanks for the reply. The manual only says placing the vanes in hole #1 increases distribution to the left, placing in #4 increases to right, experiment with your material for best results. Checked the landpride manual and it says almost exactly the same thing. I guess I'll have to experiment... ....
